I am a watercolorist creating abstract, meditative works through the interaction of shape, color, and pattern. Inspired by organic shapes and their natural imperfections, I strive to balance structure and spontaneous movement within each piece. Employing the transparent nature of watercolor, I layer colors to create harmony with the shapes, keeping my colors concentrated to maintain vibrancy while painting meticulously with small brushes.
Growing up in the Michigan countryside, I was surrounded by nature and my mother’s beautiful flower gardens which fascinated me with the shapes of the leaves and colors of the petals. Her quilting, and an endless supply of interesting fabrics, sparked my love for patterns. These early experiences were the beginning of my passion for colors, shapes and patterns.
My artistic objective is for viewers to be intrigued by my pieces and spend time with them. From the small details, vibrant colors, imperfections and movement, I paint to create an imaginative world for the viewer to become lost in the visual landscape. Through my work, I endeavor to connect with viewers and allow them to see something different in the piece, engaging their senses beyond representational work.
I am currently represented by Cocoon Art Space in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
